Educate viewers with an introductory “Civics 101” animated video
The Objective
I approached Protect Our Winters (POW) through Patagonia’s Catchafire platform, a resource for non-profits to outsource volunteers for business and creative needs. After speaking with a POW representative, I was choosen from a pool of applicants to move forward with the project.
POW was in the midst of their Outdoor State campaign and the 2020 election was quickly approaching. The objective of the project was to produce a short-form explainer video detailing the responsibilities of the United States government at the state and federal level within their respective branches.
The assets provided for the project included a Brand Standards Manual, script, and an audio recording. From these files, design choices like typography and color were predetermined. Other design elements from the manual were animated and incorporated into the video, ensuring the final product was suited for the brand.
Creating New Brand Elements
In order to deliver an entertaining message that held the audience’s attention, it was crucial to develop more branding assets that fit the main topic of the video: government. It was priority to include these illustrations to bring the message to life. Other brand elements, such as the organic lines and mapping marks, were sprinkled in to tie in the Outdoor State campaign.
Storyboarding the Script
Having the script prepared ahead of storyboarding provided a baseline for where to begin brainstorming the animation. Notion provided an organized project management system to keep track of the timeline, project files, and an agile place for the script to live.
Using the comment feature, storyboarding became a more simpler process as the visuals I imagined could be put into words and reviewed.
Let It Snow
As a snow junkie myself, working with Protect Our Winters was a dream partnership. Being able to turn my passion into action was an eye-opening experience that taught me how many opportunities there are available to contribute to being the change we all hope to see.
